Completely agree with the ideas about both fuel surcharges and not being so tied to points limitations for stays. For my vacation in Europe this summer, I wanted to return to Vienna and ultimately paid fuel surcharges for Austrian business class. This beat the available alternatives of routing through another city and adding the cost and time of connecting for me.
